ABARES University Vacation Employment Program (UVEP)
Applications for the 2012 program are now closed.
ABARES was formed following the merger of the Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) and the Bureau of Rural Sciences (BRS) in 2010. This bureau sits within the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
ABARES provides professionally independent, world-class research, analysis and information to inform government and private sector decision-makers on issues affecting the agriculture, fisheries, forestry and resource sectors. We provide a co-located base of scientific, social and economic briefing, research and analysis expertise.
The bureau offers up to fifteen students the opportunity to obtain paid work, prior to entering their honours year. Students will be employed during January and February each year. The program is open to third-year students majoring in economics, science or related disciplines and performing at an honours level.
The program normally runs for 6 weeks, during which time Vacation Employees are employed under the terms and conditions of the DAFF Collective Agreement 2009-11. Salaries for Vacation Employees in 2012 will be $39,910 per annum pro rata. A full copy of the Collective Agreement is available on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry website.
Vacation program positions are available in Canberra and will be based in our office at Marcus Clarke Street, Canberra City.
Financial assistance is not provided for travel and accommodation. The bureau can assist with general information on accommodation options if required.
The bureau takes the professional development aspects of its Vacation Employment Program seriously, and will do its upmost to ensure that employees are engaged on meaningful projects under the supervision of talented and experienced managers. We will also seek to accommodate preferences for placement where possible.
Please note that interviews may not be conducted for these positions. Candidates may be assessed on the basis of their application (including referees) and their academic record.
Please refer to the ABARES website for further information about the bureau.
