Papua New Guinea has the third largest area of tropical forest in the world.
PNG"s forests are a vital component of the subsistence lifestyle of many communities and are of global importance for conservation of forest biodiversity.
Forests have been harvested for commercial timber production for 20 years and forest resource use is considered an integral component of national development.
Virtually all PNG forests are under the customary ownership of local communities, presenting a significant challenge for forest development planning.
