A grant is an arrangement that allows the portfolio minister or paying agency to determine whether or not a particular applicant receives funding. The grant payment can be made to an organisation or individual and is intended to assist the recipient to achieve their goals, and to promote one or more policy objectives of the Australian Government. The recipient is required to act in accordance with any terms or conditions specified in the arrangement.

The department's Clarity grants management system was introduced in 2008–09 and centralises all data on grants, facilitating more accurate reporting across all grant programs. The system will enable us to more easily comply with our reporting requirements, including publishing of grants information on the web (as required under the Commonwealth Grant Policy Framework).

Information on individual grants awarded by the department since 1 January 2009 is available at www.daff.gov.au under reporting obligations. This information, for each grant, includes the name of the recipient, the name of the program from which the grant was made, the grant amount and the location where the grant funding is to be spent.
