Cultivate your skills

Throughout your graduate year you will undertake a structured training and development program resulting in a Graduate Certificate in Public Administration from the University of Canberra. This training provides a kick-start to equipping you with the skills and knowledge that will place you in a highly competitive position within the department and the Australian Public Service, as well as providing a strong foundation for completing further postgraduate study.

You'll also undertake a formal induction program to introduce you to working in the department and the Australian Public Service, a foundations of leadership workshop, training in communications and project management as well as a five day industry tour where you will meet with key industry representatives.

Support network

As a graduate you will receive plenty of support to assist in your transition to the department and Canberra. This includes support from the GDP managers, trained supervisors, experienced facilitators and coaches as well as a network of previous graduates.

You’ll also have the opportunity to give and receive feedback on your progress through individual meetings, regular focus groups and monthly graduate group meetings.

Social Network of Graduates (SNOG)

On commencement many graduates join the Social Network of Graduates. This network is made up of graduates from a variety of public and private sector organisations and organises a variety of social activities and events for its members. It is a great way to meet other graduates and provides valuable support to those who have only recently moved to Canberra. Should you choose to become a member, DAFF will cover the cost of your membership fee.

Rotations

Graduates undertake three challenging workplace rotations that aim to provide you with a diverse overview of the department. Through these rotations graduates are provided the opportunity to contribute to policy development, program management and corporate management within the department.
