Call for members of Australia’s new export wheat regulator

Interested experts can apply to serve on the new independent regulator for bulk wheat export marketing, Wheat Exports Australia (WEA).

The Government hopes to see a broad skills base, including potentially people with expertise in international trade and marketing, commodity trading, foreign exchange trading, finance, economics, regulation, public policy, business, law, grains production and grains handling.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is establishing a selection committee to produce a list of names for the Minister to consider.

Members of WEA will consider applications for bulk export accreditation, and will give growers certainty of the selling options available to them, before harvest begins.

Consultation on the wheat marketing reforms was on-going, including the Senate Committee inquiry.

Submissions have closed on the exposure draft of the legislation, and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is considering submissions received.

The final draft legislation is expected to be introduced to Parliament next month and the WEA is expected to begin operating when a new system takes effect on 1 July 2008.

Expressions of interest to serve as a WEA member close 5pm (AEST) 24 April 2008.
