Poultry farmers are on the front foot when it comes to disease prevention following today’s launch of the 'National Farm Biosecurity Manual for Poultry Production'.
Developed by the commercial poultry industry with the Commonwealth and state governments, the manual puts Australia in an excellent position to prevent diseases that could threaten poultry businesses.
"Effective biosecurity is our best defence against the introduction of infectious agents and the spread of disease," said Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Andy Carroll.
"The manual launched today is an important milestone in our preparedness against the threat of avian influenza and other serious poultry diseases.
"It provides a set of minimum standards applicable across all poultry industry sectors, with information on everyday procedures, outbreak procedures and a range of useful resources and links.
"Industry uptake is critical for improved biosecurity, and I’m pleased to hear several sectors have already begun tailoring aspects of the manual to suit their needs.
"While developed with commercial producers in mind, I encourage all Australian poultry farmers to apply the principles outlined in the manual.
"This publication is a significant achievement that really shows what can be accomplished when industry and governments work closely together."
The manual was launched at the third Government-Industry Avian Influenza Forum.
Copies will be distributed to poultry industry groups and are available by emailing OCVO
