The Agricultural Productivity Division aims to make Australia’s agricultural and food industries more globally competitive through the provision of sound policy advice and program administration. 

It is focused on developing the food and fibre 'value chain' from farm production through processing to the consumer, and consists of teams that have specific responsibility for industry sectors such as crops, wine, horticulture, wool, meat, dairy and processed food and beverages. These teams contribute to achieving positive outcomes in industry development and regulation, supply chain management and quality systems, product integrity, innovation, market access and trade, labour, education, security and sustainability.
 
They pursue these outcomes in co-operation with other divisions in the department, other relevant government agencies and industry.

Food

The Food, Horticulture and Wine Branch aims to advance and improve the competitiveness of Australia’s food, horticulture and wine industries, and to achieve supply chain competitiveness, structural adjustment and innovative practices within these industries.

It also provides advice on water and irrigation issues and manages the Murray Darling Basin Irrigation Management Grants and Irrigation Industries Workshops Programs. In addition, the branch administers the $35 million Regional Food Producers Innovation and Productivity Program and the $5 million Promoting Australian Produce initiative.

The Crops Branch works with wheat, sugar and other cropping industries to ensure their continued viability and profitability.

The Crops Branch is also managing the wind-down of the Advancing Agricultural Industries program that aimed to help primary industries develop their self-reliance, resilience and ability to efficiently manage change.

Livestock Industries

The Livestock Industries Branch has a policy focus to help agriculture industries improve their responsiveness to the ever-changing market. The Branch develops and delivers advice to the Minister and the Australian Government on issues related to meat, wool and dairy and intensive livestock and game. The branch liaises with industry, particularly through representative organisations, on matters including international market access and export opportunities, as well as specific impediments to industry development. The branch also delivers administered funding, facilitates statutory funding and industry-related structural adjustment and administers industry-related legislation.
