People Strategy 2011–2016
This people strategy complements and supports the strategic statement. It describes how we, individually and as a department, can foster our culture and our capability—in the context of the government’s priorities for the department, and in a dynamic and changing workplace.
Our Culture
We, individually and as a department, promote and uphold the APS Values and Code of Conduct. To achieve our goals, we aspire to be:
Leaders
We willingly tackle important issues
Creative
We are open to doing things differently to achieve success
Future thinkers
We anticipate and adapt to new situations
Compassionate
We are mindful of the impact we have on others
Responsive
We make things happen
Collaborative
We build on our partnerships to succeed
People Priorities
To create this culture we, individually and as a department, will:
- identify and develop the skills and capabilities that we need to meet organizational priorities
- strengthen our capability to anticipate, prepare for and tackle the big issues
- embrace innovation by being open to new ideas and taking managed risks
- manage change in a constructive and inclusive way
- attract and retain a skilled, diverse and capable workforce
- cultivate leaders who are visible, outward-looking role models who listen and communicate
- seek out, listen to and respond thoughtfully to feedback from our stakeholders
- recognise good performance and manage poor performance: this will include supporting each other through hard times and listening when things go wrong
- provide clear direction and feedback to staff who report to us, while seeking the same from those we report to
- ensure a safe and respectful workplace that allows us to perform at our best
- support attractive work arrangements that balance our business and individual needs.
