Reconciliation Action Plan
The Reconciliation Action Plan program, launched in 2006, is led by Reconciliation Australia, the peak national body promoting reconciliation between Indigenous and non–Indigenous Australians.
What is a RAP?
A RAP provides an organisation with a framework for the future, detailing steps and priorities to achieve Indigenous equality. We are one of more than 50 federal government agencies (plus many private–sector organisations) with a RAP.

What is a RAP report?
- A requirement of having a RAP is to report regularly against it. Reconciliation Australia has set a framework for RAP content and reporting, so that all organisations structure their goals and achievements around the three areas of:
- building relationships with
- respecting the contributions of, and
- ensuring equal opportunities for Indigenous Australians.

How can the RAP and the RAP report help me?
These documents are great resources for both staff and for the external stakeholders and clients they work with. Here are just some of the ways you could consider leveraging them:
- case studies in the report are tangible examples of reconciliation in action through DAFF people and projects–use them to engage your stakeholders, to showcase the department’s work, and to help you talk about DAFF’s goals and achievements
- if you work with external Indigenous stakeholders (e.g. land councils, community groups, ranger groups) you can use the RAP and the RAP report to pinpoint areas for collaboration
- if you are an Indigenous staff member or you have Indigenous staff working for you, the RAP and RAP report can help you to pinpoint resources to support you, and to see how the department is tracking against its recruitment, diversity and other people strategies
- the RAP and RAP report can be used as research tools to help policy staff to frame policies and priorities, and project staff to design programs – including how and in what circumstances to engage with Indigenous stakeholders, clients or staff; and how to keep that engagement aligned with DAFF reconciliation goals.
