On 4 July 2015 the Prime Minister, the Hon. Tony Abbott MP, and the Hon. Barnaby Joyce MP, Minister for Agriculture, announced the launch of the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper. Additional information on each of the measures announced in the White Paper will be uploaded to the department’s website as it becomes available.

Drought and rural assistance for farmers

The Australian Government provides programs to support farm families and farm businesses in hardship. Information on assistance provided by the Australian Government, including assistance for drought affected farmers, is available at Assistance Measures, or by telephoning the Farmer Assistance line on 13 23 16 from 8 am to 8 pm, Monday to Friday.

National Drought Program Reform

A new national approach to drought programs has been in place since 1 July 2014.​ The new approach replaces the Excepti​onal Circumstances arrangements and focuses on encouraging farmers to prepare for and manage the effects of drought and other challenges. The new Farm Household Allowance is the Australian Government’s main contribution to reform. See the Drought assistance contacts for links to state and territory initiatives.
