Rural Leadership and Development Projects

The Advancing Agricultural Industries program has concluded.
Current projects will continue through to completion, but no further funding calls will be made under the program.

Initiatives include:

  • Sponsorship of the Victorian Farmers Federation Young Agribusiness Professionals Group
  • Sponsorship of Indigenous participation in the Australian Rural Leadership Program (ARLP)
  • Sponsorship of an ARLP study
  • Sponsorship of the Year of the Farmer initiative.


The Women’s Advancement Initiative was developed under the Industry Partnership program and continued under the Advancing Agricultural Industries program. Under this initiative, grants of up to $80 000 were available for non-government organisations to build the skills and confidence of women in agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries to better enable them to participate in leadership roles at the local, regional and national level.

  • Barwon Darling Alliance: “Women Advancing Leadership Knowledge and Skills” workshops aim to develop the leadership skills of women in the wider Bourke area (particularly around roles and responsibilities of boards) and allow women to develop greater confidence in taking a leadership role in their communities. Value of funding - $80 000 (GST exclusive).
  • Dairy South Australia: “Dairying Women- Leading the Whey” workshops aim to enhance the leadership, enthusiasm, confidence, communication skills and strategic planning ability of 24 women in the South Australian dairy industry. Value of funding - 37 540 (GST exclusive).
  • Gippsland Women’s Local Government Association: “Women Can Do Leadership” project aims to increase confidence and leaderships skills through a six month leadership program. The program aims to enhance skills in leadership, communication, goal setting, planning, conflict resolution skills, confidence, community engagement and collaboration amongst women of the Gippsland region in Victoria. Value of funding - $80 000 (GST exclusive).
  • Murray Irrigation Ltd: “Women's Leadership in the Irrigation Industry” workshops will provide 20 women living and working in the irrigated areas of the New South Wales Murray region with greater knowledge and understanding of major government water reforms and their potential implications for the region. Workshops will also enhance the negotiation, facilitation, public speaking and media skills of these women so they may more effectively contribute to industry decision making. Value of funding - $80 000 (GST exclusive).
  • National Centre for Sustainability: “Empowering women with sustainable leadership capacity” project will incorporate a mentorship program, leadership courses and a website for participants to share knowledge.  Value of funding - $42 636.36 (GST exclusive).
  • Northern Territory Agricultural Association Ltd: “Business Decision Making Workshops” will provide training to ensure that people, profit and the environment are considered with every decision; leading to business growth, creativity and longevity. Value of funding - $14 050 (GST exclusive)
  • Queensland Rural Women’s Network: “Business Decision Making Workshops” will provide training to ensure that people, profit and the environment are considered with every decision; leading to business growth, creativity and longevity. Value of funding - $7790 (GST exclusive).


The Rural Indigenous Engagement Pilot Program aims to increase the involvement of Indigenous Australians in agriculture, fishing, forest and related industries. Under this initiative, grants were available for non-government organisations for mentoring, awareness raising, information sharing and training activities. Projects were chosen for their innovation and potential for practical and ongoing engagement between Indigenous people and the agriculture, fishing and forest industries.

  • Ninti One Ltd: aims to link Indigenous Australians to the Bush Foods Market to facilitate the transfer of knowledge between Indigenous groups and the Australian bush foods industry in desert regions of Australia. Value of funding - $49 956 (GST exclusive).
  • Northern Territory Cattleman's Association: aims to prepare employers and employees for an effective work relationship within the pastoral sector, through cross cultural awareness, mentoring approaches and pre-vocational preparation. Value of funding - $50 000 (GST exclusive).
  • Lachlan Aboriginal Natural Management Corporation: aims to conduct employment expos in Cowra and Condobolin to showcase Indigenous and non-Indigenous businesses, skills and employment and training opportunities within the Lachlan Valley region. Value of funding - $45 500 (GST exclusive).
  • Ngalang Boodja Council Aboriginal Corporation: aims to provide fish breeding and wattle tree cultivation training to Indigenous people in the Collie region. Value of funding - $40 920 (GST exclusive).
  • Culpra Milli Aboriginal Corporation: aims to strengthen the business and labour capacity of Culpra Station to become an economically sustainable enterprise. Value of funding - $24 780 (GST exclusive).
  • Kailag Enterprises Pty Ltd: aims to develop capacity to operate Australia's first sponge farm on Yorke Island, by building practical technical skills and leadership training. Value of funding - $38 201 (GST exclusive).
  • Goulburn Ovens Institute of Tafe: “Growing Leaders, Growing Culture” aims to provide mentoring and leadership training, careers counselling and planning to young Indigenous people. Value of funding - $48 000 (GST exclusive).
