Fats and Oils

Codex Committee on Fats and Oils (Host Government - Malaysia)

The Codex Committee on Fats and Oils (CCFO) is responsible for elaborating standards for fats and oils of animal, vegetable and marine origin including margarine and olive oil.

Existing Codex Standards

Standards relating to fats and oils* that have been endorsed and adopted into the international food code include standards on:

  • Edible Fats and Oils not Covered by Individual Standards
  • Margarine
  • Olive Oil, Virgin and Refined, and Refined Olive-pomace Oil
  • Named Vegetable Oils
  • Named Animal Fats
  • Storage and Transport of Edible Oils and Fats in Bulk

Last Meeting

The 22nd Session of the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils met in Penang, Malaysia from 21 – 25 March 2011.

Matters for Adoption by the 34th Commission

The Committee agreed to forward:

  • the Draft Amendment to the Standard for Named Vegetable Oils: Inclusion of Palm Kernel Olein and Palm Kernel Stearin (para. 30, Appendix II) to Step 8
  • the Code of Practice for the Storage and Transport of Edible Fats and Oils in Bulk: Draft Criteria to Assess the Acceptability of Substances for Inclusion in a List of Acceptable Previous Cargoes (para. 40, Appendix III) to Step 8
  • Code of Practice for the Storage and Transport of Edible Fats and Oils in Bulk: Draft List of Acceptable Previous Cargoes (para. 51, Appendix IV) to Step 8
  • the Proposed Draft List of Acceptable Previous Cargoes (para. 47, Appendix V) to Step 5/8

The Committee also agreed to:

  • propose new work on the Development of a Codex Standard for Fish Oils (para. 66, Appendix VI)
  • propose new work on Proposed Draft Amendment to the Standard for Named Vegetable Oils; Rice Bran Oil (para. 81, Appendix VII)
  • discontinue work on Proposed Draft Amendment to the Standard for Olive Oils and Olive Pomace Oils: Linolenic Acid Level (para. 59)

Matters Referred to Other Committees

Committee on Contaminants in Foods

  • The Committee agreed to ask the Committee on Contaminants in Foods whether halogenated solvents shouldbe considered as contaminants for inclusion in the GSCTFF (para. 17)
  • The Committee agreed to ask the Committee on Contaminants in Foods to replace the entries for Lead and Arsenic with “fat spreads and blended spreads” instead of ‘Margarine and minarine (para. 18)

Committee on Food Labelling

  • The Committee agreed to inform the Committee on Food Labelling that there was no need for general guidance in the case of fatty acid composition of fats and oils (para. 24)

Committee on Fish and Fishery Products

  • The Committee agreed to inform the Committee on Fish and Fishery Products that the Committee proposed to initiate a new work on the Standard for Fish Oils (para. 65)

The 23rd Session of the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils has been scheduled to be held in Malaysia from 25 February – 1 March 2013 with final arrangements subject to confirmation by the Host Country and Codex Secretariat.
