Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses

Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (Host Government – Germany)

The Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) studies nutritional issues referred by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. It also develops guidelines, general principles and standards for food including food with special dietary uses.

Existing Codex Standards

Standards relating to nutrition and foods for special dietary uses* that have been endorsed and adopted into the international food code:

  • Formula Foods for Use in Weight Control Diets
  • Formula Foods for Use in Very Low Energy Diets for Weight Reduction
  • Formulated Supplementary Foods for Older Infants and Young Children
  • General Principles for the Addition of Essential Nutrients to Foods
  • Guidelines on Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements
  • Infant Formula
  • Labelling of and Claims for Prepackaged Foods for Special Dietary Use
  • Labelling of and Claims for Foods for Special Medical Purposes
  • Nutrition Labelling
  • Processed Cereal–Based Foods for Infants and Children
  • Use of Nutrition Claims.

Outcomes from the 35th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission

The 35th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission adopted the standards at Step 5 as forwarded by the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses without amendments.

Last Meeting

The 33rd Session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) was held in Bad Soden am Taunus, Germany from 14–18 November 2011.

At this meeting the Committee agreed to forward to the 35th Session of the Commission for adoption:

  • the Proposed Draft “Nutrient Reference Values for Nutrients Associated with Risk of Diet–Related Noncommunicable Diseases for General Population (NRVs–NCD)” at Step 5/8
  • the Draft “Guidelines on Formulated Complementary Foods for Older Infants and Young Children” at Step 5

Matters of Interest to the 35th Session of the Commission

The 33rd CCNFSDU also agreed:

  • To return the Proposed Draft “General Principles for Establishing Nutrient Reference Values for Nutrients Associated with Risk of Diet–Related Non–communicable Diseases for General Population (NRVs–NCD)” to Step 3 for comment, redrafting and consideration at the next session
  • To return to Step 3 the Proposed Draft “Additional or Revised Nutrient Reference Values for Labelling Purposes in the Codex Guidelines on Nutrition Labelling”, theProposed Draft “Revision of the Codex General Principles for the Addition of Essential Nutrients to Foods” (CAC/GL 9–1987) and the Proposed Draft “Amendment of the Standard for Processed Cereal–Based Foods for Infants and Young Children” (CODEX STAN 74–1981) to Include a New Part B for Underweight Children for redrafting, comments and consideration at the next session
  • To consider the revision of the “Standard for Follow–up Formula” (CODEX STAN 156–1987) and the redrafted list of food additives at its next session

Matters Referred to Other Committees

Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA)

The Committee agreed:

  • To forward to the Committee on Food Additives two food additives for endorsement for inclusion in the “Standard for Infant Formulas and Formula for Special Medical Purposes”

Codex Committee on Food Labelling (CCFL)

The CCNFSDU agreed:

  • To forward to the Committee on Food Labelling the comments on the draft definition of NRV and to agree that there was no need to revise the definition of trans–fatty acid
  • To ask the Committee on Food Labelling to consider the question of whether to revise section 3.4.4 of the “Guidelines on Nutrition Labelling” (CAC/GL 2–1985) to insert a reference energy value in nutrition labelling
