Exceptional circumstances assistance for Mallee South-East will continue under the Mallee - Northern Wimmera revised and Northern Victoria revised EC declarations until 31 March 2009.

The Shire of Gannawarra now forms part of the Northern Victoria revised EC declared area.

The Rural City Council of Swan Hill and the Shire of Buloke now form part of the Mallee - Northern Wimmera revised EC declared area.

All producers in the declared area are eligible to apply for income support payments and interest rate subsidies.

Agriculture-dependent small business operators who derive 70 per cent of their turnover from agriculture in any EC declared area are also eligible to apply for income support payments and interest rate subsidies.

Note: If your small business: is located in a town that is substantially reliant on farm incomes and has a population of 10,000 or less; and is in an EC area (including prima facie and interim assistance areas); and can demonstrate a significant downturn in income due to the drought, you may be eligible for assistance.

Producers and small business operators should not self-assess their eligibility for income support but should call the Drought Assistance Hotline on 13 23 16.

Area Description

The Mallee South-East EC declared area is bounded by the Eastern Mallee EC declared area in the south, to the north east by the Murray River and to the north-west by the roads from Swan Hill to Ultima, Culgoa and Dumosa.

Buffer Zone

A Buffer Zone extends seven kilometres along the north-western boundary of the area.

The National Rural Advisory Council (NRAC) will commence reviewing declarations with an expiry of 31 March 2008 in mid October 2007. The assessment will continue through to the end of the main production season to include the outcomes of the 2007 harvest. NRAC expects to finalise its assessments and make a recommendation to the Minister in early 2008.
