Face-to-face meetings (roundtables)

To complement the written submissions and the webcast, a series of 19 roundtable meetings with invited stakeholders were held around Australia between 9 August and 2 September 2011 to provide an additional way for the government to collect a wide range of ideas for the national food plan using a 'focus group' approach. Around 180 stakeholders from across the supply chain and other sectors attended these meetings to provide feedback on the issues paper. Roundtable meetings were held in every capital city and a number of regional locations, including Geraldton, Barossa Valley, Armidale, Kununurra, Townsville, Toowoomba, Devonport and Bendigo.

Invited stakeholders included farmers, food production and service industries, transport and logistics companies, retailers, academics, researchers, health and nutrition, consumer and community groups, and others. Of the approximately 180 stakeholders who attended the roundtable meetings (of over 350 invited), there were approximately:

  • 39 from the farming and fishing sector including individual farmers, grower associations, corporatised farming groups and peak bodies;

  • from the food and beverage processing sector (8 of which were small to medium businesses - SME's)

  • 16 representing various advocacy, community and consumer groups;

  • 15 research and development  providers;

  • 11 representatives from regional development associations

  • 14 from the education and training sector

  • 13 from major health and nutrition groups, and

  • a further 50 from various other parts of the supply chain including, resource management, distribution, logistics, packaging, retail, business, among others.

Note that stakeholders were invited to the roundtable meetings for their individual expertise and/or organisational perspectives. Many individuals also brought multiple perspectives to the meetings (e.g. experience in different parts of the supply chain).

A full breakdown of where in the supply chain stakeholders were invited is provided in the table below.
