Dairy Australia
In recent years the dairy industry has undergone significant changes, culminating in industry deregulation in July 2000. In responding to these changes, and to assist in the adjustment to a new industry environment, the dairy industry sought rationalisation of industry statutory service arrangements particularly in respect of the delivery of collectively funded R&D and market promotion services. In order to better meet industry priorities and to provide the industry with greater ownership and control over dairy industry service arrangements, on 1 July 2003 the Australian Dairy Corporation (ADC) was converted into Dairy Australia, a Corporations Act company limited by guarantee. Additionally, all assets and liabilities of and the Dairy Research and Development Corporation (DRDC) were transferred to the new company. These changes effectively merged the R&D and marketing arms of the dairy industry.
The new arrangements will facilitate a more flexible and innovative approach to the core functions of promotion and R&D, and thereby enhance the industry’s capacity to expand and build new markets for Australian dairy products. Importantly, ownership and control of the company has been placed in the hands of its members, comprising the levy payers (dairy farmers) and dairy industry representative bodies.
Dairy Australia is funded by levies paid by dairy farmers and matching R&D funds from the Australian Government. These levies previously funded ADC and DRDC.
