What we do
The Wool Section of the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has several main responsibilities:
- Provides policy advice to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the Parliamentary Secretary and the DAFF Executive in relation to domestic and international wool issues
- provides an important information link between the Minister and the wool industry
- in conjunction with Rural Policy and Innovation, a division of DAFF, oversees the operations of the industry’s research and development body, Australian Wool Innovation, including the Statutory Funding Agreement between the Commonwealth of Australia and Australian Wool Innovation and associated legislation
- liaises with various key wool industry stakeholders, and
- maintains and builds market opportunities for Australian wool producers through technical cooperation with key wool trading partners, effective participation in negotiations, facilitation of trade agreements, collaboration with portfolio industries and exporters, as well as participation in international forums such as the Joint Working Group on Wool with China.
