Coarse grains production in Australia was an estimated 10,186 kilotonnes in 2004-2005 with approximately half of the grain produced exported. Domestic use, mainly as stockfeed, consumed the remaining grain.

Barley:

Barley is a winter grain grown in all states in wheat production areas. Barley is used for malting and as livestock feed. An estimated 6,500 kilotonnes of barley was produced in 2004/2005 with an estimated 81% being exported. It is the main coarse grain (excluding wheat) grown in Australia.

Triticale & Oats:

Triticale and oats are used largely by the domestic feed industry. Production for 2004/2005 was estimated as 1,057 kilotonnes for oats and 615 kilotonnes for triticale.

Sorghum:

Sorghum is Australia’s predominant summer grain. It is grown mainly in New South Wales and Queensland with production estimated as 1,748 kilotonnes for 2004/2005. The majority of grain produced is used for domestic stockfeed.

Maize:

Australia produces small quantities of maize, almost exclusively in Queensland and New South Wales.
