General Mapping

The mapping utility is used maintain the textual information surrounding AOI and their associated parties but more importantly it is used to maintain the spatial representation of AOI and other spatial entities like zone and observation features.  It is the mapping component that gives BioSIRT the ability to relate and present its information in a spatial context.  More detail about the advanced mapping functions of BioSIRT are provided in section 4.2 of this participant guide.

The following explains the features of the mapping component.

General Descriptions

The Map screen is divided into two panels.  The left hand side panel contains the map detail and, at times, search screen criteria.  The right hand side panel content varies depending on user actions, but includes Map information and Details information selectable by the tabs at the top of this section. The Map Form tab initially displays the index map.

Not all fields or map functions in the Map component may be available to a User, depending on how the administrator has configured their access.  A User with full access will have all fields and map functions available to them.

Down the right hand edge of the screen are four specialist mapping drawers containing tools and information relating to the map component only. These are Layers, Zoom, Main and Legend.

Above the map on the left side panel are some icons for common mapping functions.  The number of icons, and therefore tools available in this menu varies with the layers selected and the map tools that are activated. For example, the tools available will be different for point, line or polygon editing.

Icons & Screen Features

There are many tools in the mapping component and most of these are accessed by the icons displayed on the top menu bar.  The following explains their use in the same sequence as displayed from left to right.

Main Drawer (Map Drawer)

Find Spatial AOI

Selecting this feature will temporarily cover the map section in the left hand panel of the screen to bring up the Find Spatial AOI search screen, prompting you to enter search criteria.  A number of fields for Find Spatial AOI search are available.

Find AOI Party

Selecting this feature will temporarily cover the map section in the left hand panel of the screen to bring up the Party search screen, prompting you to enter search criteria.  A number of fields for Party search are available.

Find Zone

Selecting this feature will bring up the Zone search screen on the right hand side Map Form, prompting you to enter search criteria.  You need to enter at least part of a zone name, and optionally select the zone type, then press the search button.

Set Selection

Before using a select feature icon, you need to open the Main drawer and select Set Selection.  This will display the form to nominate your selection layer and method.

Layers Drawer

This drawer offers the opportunity to select which mapping layers are displayed.  These layers are grouped under CRIS, Administration, Topography and Imagery.  A mapping layer can be thought of as storing the spatial information for a particular feature, eg the zones defined during an event are stored in a zone layer.  You can choose to have a layer displayed on the map by checking the box next to it or remove a displayed layer by un-checking the box.

Note: Not all layers can be selected/de-selected at any given scale.  Many are only available once you zoom into a closer level on the map.  If the layer is not available / visible at your current scale, the box is greyed out and if you hold the mouse pointer over the layer name, the scale required to make it visible will be displayed.

Several icons appear next to features in the Layers drawer:
