Major differences between nymphs of these species: nymphs of these species are sometimes confused when Oedaleus occurs in high numbers where migratory locusts are more commonly seen. However, they are easy to distinguish:

• migratory locust nymphs have a hairy 'chest' (underside of thorax)
• Oedaleus nymphs have a distinctive face stripe and banded hind leg femurs (thigh)
