Avian Influenza Human Cases and Deaths 2007
Avian influenza H5N1 (bird flu) has caused the death of more than 200 people to date. Accurate statistics on human deaths caused by H5N1 can be found at the World Health Organization (WHO) website.

14 December: A 7 year old girl in Myanmar has survived avian influenza H5N1 infection.
13 December: For the first time, avian influenza H5N1 has killed two people in Pakistan. Two brothers working on a poultry farm were admitted to hospital and died two days later.
A 47 year old Indonesian man from Tangerang has died from avian influenza H5N1. The man had kept ducks.
11 December: A 28 year old Indonesian woman from Tangerang has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection. The source of infection is believed to be fertilizer that she had sold.
7 December: The father of the man who died last week (reported below) has been hospitalised, suffering from avian influenza but his condition is improving. His infection has raised questions as to possible human-human transfer but Chinese authorities announced that the son's virus had not mutated. Authorities are still unsure about how they both initially contracted the virus.
3 December: A 24 year old man in China's Jiangsu province has died from avian influenza H5N1. It was reported that he had no contact with birds.
November
10 November: A 31 year old Indonesian man has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection. It was reported that he had contact with sick birds prior to falling ill.
3 November: A 30 year old Indonesian woman from the outskirts of Jakarta has died of suspected avian influenza H5N1. She is believed to have had contact with hundreds of birds that died last month.
October
23 October: A 4 year old Indonesian girl has died from avian influenza H5N1. It is believed she had contact with sick chickens in her neighbourhood. She died within two days of being admitted to hospital.
13 October: A 13 year old Indonesian boy has died from avian influenza H5N1, taking the country's AI death toll to 88. He was from West Java.
5 October: A 44 year old Indonesian woman has died from suspected avian influenza H5N1. The woman lived in residential complex owned by the oil company Caltex. It is not known whether she had contact with infected birds.
1 October: A 21 year old Indonesian man has died from suspected avian influenza H5N1. The man from West Java became ill on September 18 and was hospitalised on the 25th. Officials are investigating whether or not he had contact with sick birds.
September
23 September: A 30 year old Indonesian woman has died from suspected avian influenza H5N1 infection. Tests are being done to confirm the cause of death. She became ill several days after her pet bird died.
6 September: The 33 year old Indonesian man (reported below) has died. He caught the virus after slaughtering a sick chicken that he had purchased from a local market.
3 September: A 33 year old Indonesian man from the Riau province is in hospital with suspected avian influenza H5N1 infection. In Bali, two children are among five people still in hospital, and being treated for AI.
1 September: The WHO has reported the death of four people in Vietnam from avian influenza H5N1 infection. All came from the north of the country. A fifth 29 year old man is recovering.
August
21 August: A 28 year old woman has died of suspected avian influenza H5N1 infection in Bali. Tests are being carried out to determine the exact cause of death. She had acute pneumonia and high fever for a period of no more than week. She was a chicken trader in the Batugaing village in Kediri.
20 August: A 2 year old Indonesian girl has been hospitalised in the Riau province with suspected avian influenza H5N1. Tests are being done to confirm the virus but she is receiving avian influenza treatment.
16 August: A 17 year old Indonesian girl has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection - five days after falling ill. She was from a town west of Jakarta. It has not yet been determined how she contracted the virus.
13 August: A 29 year old woman has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection in Bali, Indonesia. Her 5 year old daughter has also died but the cause of her death is yet to be confirmed. Large numbers of poultry had died in the area over the past two weeks, and the two did have contact with sick birds.
3 August: A 12 year old Indonesian girl has been admitted to hospital with suspected avian influenza infection. She had contact with sick poultry and developed high fever and respiratory problems soon after.
July
31 July: A pregnant 22 year old Vietnamese woman has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection. She came from the Ha Tay province where there are a lot of poultry farms.
22 July: A 25 year old Egyptian woman from the northern Damietta province has become infected with avian influenza H5N1 after handling dead infected birds. She is being treated with tamiflu in hospital.
16 July: A man in Phichit, Thailand has died of suspected avian influenza infection. The man lived next door to a cock fighting yard where birds had recently died of unknown causes.
9 July: A 6 year old Indonesian girl has died from multi-organ failure due to avian influenza H5N1. It was not initially known how she contracted the virus but reports now say she was in contact with infected poultry near her school. This brings Indonesia's AI human death toll to 81.
June
26 June: A 40 year old Indonesian man from Bac Lieu province is suspected of being infected with avian influenza H5N1 after preparing and eating infected duck. The man also works on a duck farm that had recently seen a large number of bird deaths.
23 June: A 3 year old Indonesian girl has tested positive to avian influenza H5N1 and is being treated in a hospital in Sumatra. She has been in contact with infected poultry.
A 4 year old Egyptian boy has also tested positive to avian influenza H5N1. The boy is from the province of Qena and is in a stable condition in hospital.
21 June: The 28 year old Vietnamese woman (reported below) has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection. The woman had not eaten poultry in 10 days prior to being infected but chickens in her household were in close proximity to ducks that had recently died in her village.
16 June: A 20 year old Vietnamese man has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection. He was from the Ha Tay province but reports have not stated how he became infected. Meanwhile two Vietnamese women have also been infected with avian influenza H5N1. One woman has recovered and the other remains on a respirator. It is known that one had slaughtered and eaten infected duck. They are aged 28 and 29.
14 June: An Indonesian man has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection after killing and eating infected chicken. He had slaughtered all of his chickens in a remote area after three of them died unexpectedly.
11 June: A 4 year old girl from Qena province in Egypt has been hospitalised with avian influenza H5N1 infection. She is in a stable condition after presenting with pneumonia, high temperature and difficulty breathing.
8 June: A 10 year old girl from Qena province in Egypt has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection. It was reported that she had contact with backyard birds.
4 June: The 19 year old Chinese soldier reported below on 26 May has died from avian influenza infection.
3 June: An 11 year old boy thought to be infected with avian influenza has died in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Tests are being conducted to determine the exact cause of death but the boy was admitted to hospital with severe avian influenza symptoms and he did have contact with fowl.
2 June: A Vietnamese poultry slaughterhouse worker has been infected with avian influenza H5N1. The man was hospitalised with fever on May 26 and remains in a stable condition.
1 June: A 15 year old girl from Java in Indonesia has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection. She was sent to two hospitals between May 21 and her death on 29 May. It was reported that she prepared raw infected chicken before cooking at her home where other fowl had recently died due to the disease.
May
30 May: A 45 year old Indonesian man from Central Java has died from avian influenza. The man was hospitalised on May 17 after he slaughtered and ate infected chicken. Other dead fowl were found near his home.
26 May: A 19 year old Chinese soldier has avian influenza H5N1 and is being treated in a Chinese military hospital. There are no reports as to how he contracted the disease.
13 May: A pregnant 26 year old woman in Indonesia has died of suspected avian influenza infection. The woman was treated at home for 11 days before being moved between two hospitals. Initial tests have suggested avian influenza but investigations are being carried out to see if she had contact with poultry.
April
16 April: Five members of one family in Indonesia have been admitted to hospital and are suspected of being infected with avian influenza. The family members range from age 6 to 50. They became ill after five of their chickens died, which they then buried in their front yard.
11 April: The WHO has confirmed the deaths of a 13 year old girl in Cambodia and a 15 year old girl in Egypt, from avian influenza infection.
March
20 March: A nine-month old baby girl in Hong Kong has tested positive for avian influenza H9N2, a low pathogenic form of AI. Authorities were told the infant was often taken to wet markets where live poultry was present. She has recovered and been released from hospital.
19 March: Both the 32 year old Indonesian man (reported 16 March, below) and the 21 year old Indonesian woman (reported below on 12 March) have both died from AI infection. The man has only been reported as having a parrot in his home with no infected poultry in the neighbourhood.
A 2 year-old Egyptian boy has tested positive for avian influenza after being admitted to a hospital in Aswan. He is receiving tamiflu treatment. He came from the same area as the 10 year old girl who was reported below on 15 March. She has fully recovered.
16 March: A 32 year old Indonesian man has died from avian influenza bringing the death toll in the country from the disease to 65. It has not been determined how the man caught the disease but he did own a pet bird.
A 42 year old woman in Laos has died from avian influenza. She fell ill in late February and died on March 4. A healthy duck kept at the woman's home has tested positive to the H5 virus.
15 March: A 10 year old girl has tested positive to avian influenza H5N1 after being admitted to hospital. Her condition has improved since being treated with oseltamivir. Also, the 4 year old boy (reported on 11 March) has recovered and been released from hospital.
12 March: A 20 year old Indonesian woman who is in critical conditon in hospital, has tested positive for avian influenza H5N1. She is from the East Java area and fell ill after cleaning an area where a neighbour had dumped dead chickens.
11 March: A 4 year old Egyptian boy has contracted avian influenza H5N1 after handling infected poultry. The boy from the Nile Delta province of Dakahlia was hospitalised within a day of falling ill. He is receiving tamiflu treatment.
8 March: The 15 year old Laotian girl who was reported on 26 February, has died from avian influenza infection. She was from the suburb of Vientiane where the government is now stepping up efforts to raise awareness of the disease and improve surveillance measures.
6 March: Avian influenza has claimed the life of a 23 year old woman in Lagos, Nigeria. Reports are suggesting the government's fall-back on its promise to provide farmers with compensation for their loss of birds is to blame for the lack of willingness to practice good biosecurity and report sick and dead birds, hence the increase in outbreaks and human infections.
The 4 year old Egpytian girl who was infected with avian influenza H5N1 (reported 27 February) has recovered and been released from hospital after being treated with tamiflu tablets.
4 March: A 42 year old woman in Laos has died from suspected avian influenza infection after suffering from severe pneumonia and a high temperature. Tests are being done to determine if it was the H5N1 strain. She is from a village near the capital Vientiane.
1 March: Two people in Afghanistan have been hospitalised after showing signs of avian influenza infection. Meanwhile, around 4,000 birds per day are being vaccinated in Afghanistan.
February
28 February: A 44 year old woman who operates a farm has tested positive for avian influenza in China's Fujian province. She is in a severe condition in hospital.
27 February: Egypt has recorded its 23rd avian influenza case in a 4 year old girl from the province of Dakahlia. She is being treated in hospital after coming into contact with infected poultry. Her relatives are also being tested for the virus.
Three Indonesian people from the same family have suspected avian influenza infection and are being treated in hospital. Several days before displaying symptoms a number of chickens that they owned had died suddenly.
26 February: Laos has confirmed its first human case of avian influenza in a 15 year old girl who worked on a poultry farm near Vientiane. The poultry farm had an outbreak in birds in January this year.
24 February: A 5 year old Egyptian boy has recovered from avian influenza infection after being treated with tamiflu. Meanwhile, Egypt has placed a ban on the import of ducklings claiming they featured in 95 per cent of the last 100 outbreaks in the country.
15 February: A 22 year old Nigerian woman has died, two days after being admitted to hospital. Tests are being conducted to determine the cause of death which is expected to be avian influenza infection.
14 February: Health officials in Bangladesh are investigating the recent and unexplained deaths of three people. A 32 year old man died on 26 January, and his wife (aged 24) died last Friday. Another man died on Monday. Two others - including the sister of one of the deceased - are in hospital. All come from the village of Beloya in northwestern Bangladesh.
A 37 year old Egyptian woman has tested positive for the avian influenza virus. She has been hospitalised and is from the same area as the 17 year old girl who died earlier this month.
11 February: According to the latest analysis undertaken by the WHO, 90 per cent of people infected with avian influenza have been under 40 years of age, and 60 per cent of them have died. Just over half of all cases (132 out of 256) were aged under 20 years, and 89 per cent were aged over 40 years. The highest case fatality rate (76 per cent) was found in those aged 10 to 19 years; the lowest case fatality rate (40 per cent) was found among those aged over 50 years. To date, avian influenza has infected 272, and killed 166 people.
Three people in the Turkish village that had an outbreak of avian influenza H5N1 several days ago, are being tested in hospital after displaying feverish symptoms. Tests on a fourth suspected case showed negative results.
A 20 year old Indonesian woman who was hospitalised two days ago, has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection. It is being investigated whether or not she had contact with a dead infected chicken. Three hours after her death, a 9 year old boy also died from avian influenza H5N1 infection.
6 February: Indonesia has identified two human cases of avian influenza H5N1. The first case is a girl who caught a wild bird - the bird died two days later. News reports suggest she is still alive. The second case is in a man from West Java - an area with a lot of poultry deaths. The newspaper report indicated that he had died from the virus.
A vet who attended England's avian influenza H5N1 outbreak in Suffolk, is undergoing tests after experiencing mild respiratory illness. Doctors believe it could be normal seasonal flu but they are also testing for avian influenza.
A 17 year old Egyptian girl has died after contracting avian influenza H5N1 in January. Initial tests indicated that she was suffering from seasonal flu, but later tests confirmed the deadly virus. News reports say she had been in contact with sick and dead birds.

31 January: A 22 year old African woman has died from avian influenza H5N1 after feathering and disembowelling an infected chicken. She was from the sub-Saharan region that has not previously seen any human cases.
23 January: Indonesia has three more suspected human cases of avian influenza. A man aged 51 and his daughter aged 26, are being treated in hospital after developing avian influenza type symptoms. There were reports of sick and dead birds in their neighbourhood. In Makassar, a 22 month old girl is also being tested for the virus. She had played with fowl in a neighbours yard, which later had died suddenly.
22 January: The 27 year old Egyptian woman, reported on 17 January, died in hospital on 19 January.
20 January: A 26 year old Indonesian woman has died from avian influenza infection. She fell ill on 11 January and was admitted to hospital on the 17th. She had contact with a sick chicken six days prior to falling ill.
19 January: 11 people from 9 provinces in Thailand are being monitored for avian influenza. All have flu-like symptoms and have been in contact with poultry - some were involved in recent culling activities.
17 January: A 27 year old Egyptian woman who raised chickens in her home, has tested positive for avian influenza H5N1 in the Beni Suef province, south of Cairo. Members of her family are also being tested for the virus.
15 January: An 18 year old Indonesian boy, who is the son of the 37 year old woman (below), is being treated for avian influenza H5N1. His father is also being treated for similar symptoms but tests have confirmed he does not have the H5N1 strain of the virus. Newspaper reports claim the death of four Indonesian people this week, with hospitals treating a further five cases. Reports suggest the two major Indonesian hospitals that can treat avian influenza victims, have no room left in their isolation units.
12 January: The 37 year old Indonesian woman who was hospitalised in the first week of January, has died from organ malfunction due to avian influenza H5N1 infection.
11 January: South Korea's health ministry has reported that a poultry worker was infected with avian influenza after his participation in culling infected poultry in late 2006. It is reported that the worker did not develop any serious illness and is now healthy.
10 January: The 14 year old Indonesian boy, reported on 7 January, has died from avian influenza H5N1 infection.
China has reported a human case of avian influenza H5N1 in a 37 year old man from the province of Anhui. There have been no reported outbreaks in the area raising questions whether the virus is circulating undetected. The man recovered and was released from hospital
8 January: A 37 year old Indonesian woman has been hospitalised in Jakarta and diagnosed with avian influenza H5N1. She is from the same district as the 14 year old boy who was hospitalised several days ago. Authorities are trying to find the source of the infection.
7 January: A 14 year old Indonesian boy has been hospitalised with suspected avian influneza. He had been in contact with ducks at his home in Tangerang in West Java.
