Inspecting your animals regularly for pests and disease symptoms is important.

Early detection and containment of a pest or disease is essential to prevent itsspread and assists in the eradication efforts by agriculture authorities.

If you spot anything unusual in livestock or birds:
  • Report the suspect disease by phoning the Exotic Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888 or contact your local Department of Primary Industries or Agriculture.
If there is a suspected or confirmed disease outbreak thefollowing biosecurity measures need to be adhered to:
  • Do not move livestock or birds onto, or off the property (apply a stock standstill).

  • Isolate suspected livestock or birds in well fenced paddocks, yards, buildings, pens or cages.

  • Some diseases are air-borne so keep your stock away from the boundary of your property.

  • Avoid the unnecessary movement of people and vehicles on and off the property.

  • Clean and disinfect any gear or equipment that has been in contact with suspect animals.

Some diseases can be easily carried on people’s clothing, hats, hair andfootwear. Before having contact with other animals outside your property,change into clean clothes and footwear; wash your hands with soap andwater; and blow your nose. Sometimes it may be necessary to have ashower and wash your hair before leaving the property.
