Draft International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures released for comment

Comments are being sought on draft International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) prior to adoption.

The Australian IPPC Secretariat is seeking comments from interest groups in Australia on the following draft ISPMs:

  • Revision of ISPM 7 Phytosanitary certification system
  • Revision of ISPM 12 Phytosanitary certificates
  • Appendix to ISPM 26 ‘Establishment of pest free areas for fruit flies (Tephritidae)’ - Fruit fly trapping
  • Three irradiation treatments

Copies of these draft ISPMs can be obtained from the Australian IPPC Secretariat Email or at Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM).

As comments on the draft standards must be submitted through governments that are parties to the IPPC, your comments should be provided to the Australian IPPC Secretariat by 18 February 2011 using the templates available at Comments on draft ISPMs.

The CPM, the governing body of the IPPC, will consider the adoption of the draft ISPMs at its sixth meeting to be held in Rome from 14–18 March 2011. At the meeting, the CPM will also consider:

  • a new strategic framework for the IPPC
  • a strategy for national capacity building
  • communications strategy
  • mobilisation of resources
  • adjusting IPPC activities to its critical financial situation

As a party to the Convention, Australia will be represented at the CPM by a delegation from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
