Stocktake of Australian Animal Welfare

The Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS) working groups have completed two stocktakes for each of their sectors.  The stocktakes have looked at: 

The purpose of each stocktake was to assess gaps or any weaknesses and to provide a platform for progressing change through action plans that will be implemented through the AAWS.

Summary Report on the Animal Sector Stocktake

The Summary Report (compiled from the six stocktake reports above) was commissioned by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and summarises the following:

  • current animal welfare arrangements in Australia for the animal sectors above
  • gaps, weaknesses and risks in the current arrangements
  • priorities for future action, and
  • cross-sectoral animal welfare arrangements.

Stocktake Reports on Animal Welfare Education and Training

The AAWS Education and Training Working Group have undertaken a comprehensive stocktake of Australian education and training in animal welfare. The report of the review process was finalised in February 2008.

The stocktake of Australian education and training in animal welfare was followed by an international benchmarking study of animal welfare education and training aimed at assessing Australia’s performance against five key criteria. The study also identified how Australia could learn from a range of innovative international education and training programs.
