Greyhound export
The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) regulates the export of greyhounds through its Live Animal Exports program. AQIS certifies whether the animals are fit for export, and verifies that all of the importing country’s health requirements have been met.
Once the animals reach their destination, welfare concerns are difficult for Australia to pursue because the animals are outside Australia’s legal jurisdiction. Australia supports the efforts of governments in other countries to improve animal welfare in many ways, including through providing information on animal welfare standards and systems used in Australia.
Australia is a member of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and the OIE Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania. Through this Commission and through Australian agriculture counsellors in Asian countries, the Australian Government continues to raise awareness of animal welfare issues and provide information and technical cooperation to help improve animal health and welfare in the region.
