Puppy Export Trade

National Consultative Committe on Animal Welfare (NCCAW) Position Statement

NCCAW recognises that the majority of puppies exported from Australia are of high commercial value and are provided for appropriately by the transporter and importer.

On this basis NCCAW accepts the validity of the puppy export trade where:

  • Puppies purchased in Australia for export are held in appropriate conditions

  • AQIS and the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) standards are met

  • The puppies are in good health, fully weaned and sufficiently developed to cope with the export journey, and

  • Educational material on the funding and husbandry of puppies is provided for importers and purchasers.

This Position Statement was first published in November 2004 and was reviewed by NCCAW on 20 February 2008.  NCCAW made the decision to retain it without amendment.
