Ballast Water

On July 1 2001, Australia introduced mandatory ballast water management requirements (the requirements) to reduce the risk of introducing harmful aquatic organisms into Australia’s marine environment through ship’s ballast water.

The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) is the lead agency for the management of ballast water taken up overseas. All internationally trading vessels are required to manage their ballast water in accordance with AQIS requirements.
