Livestock carriers

Livestock vessels entering Australia are considered to be of high quarantine risk due to the nature of the cargo. Information provided via the Quarantine Pre-arrival Report (QPAR) is used to assess the actual risks attributable to individual vessels. Master must also submit the Statement by Master of Livestock Vessel Form with their QPAR.

All livestock vessels must undergo inspection on every visit to Australia, irrespective of the vessel’s history or last port of call.

Risks attributable to livestock vessels include:

All livestock vessels other than those that have only carried Australian and/or New Zealand origin livestock must be inspected offshore prior to arrival at port.

These vessels must also be thoroughly cleaned (with Soda Ash), disinfected and dis-insected prior to arrival. Please contact your local AQIS office for further advice. Further information is also available via the Livestock Vessel Masters Information Sheet.
