Private Veterinarian Orientation
Office Hours Monday to Friday 8:00 am – 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm – 4.30 pm
Important Information
When arranging consultations for Dogs/Cats at Eastern Creek PEAQ please be aware that animal attendants must accompany Veterinarians whilst on site; hours of work are 8.00am-4.00pm with a morning tea break between 10.00-10.30am and lunch break from 12.00-12.30pm, Monday to Friday. Please ensure that your attendance times will facilitate a departure prior to 4.00pm.
General visiting is held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1.30pm-3.30pm, so consultations should be organised prior to 1.30pm on these days where possible. Dogs/cats in isolation must be attended to last. Private veterinarians must adhere to all kennel and cattery management procedures on this site.
Prior to attending the kennel/cattery area the attending veterinarian must collect a ‘Private Veterinarian Consultation Record’ provided by AQIS administration. The attending veterinarian must record all clinical findings and all treatments and dosages on the animals PEQS medication sheet and the ‘Private Veterinarian Consultation Record’. The ‘Private Veterinarian Consultation Record’ is to be delivered to the AQIS administration office prior to departing the station. You must contact the owner to discuss the consultation.
All prescribed medication must be clearly labelled.
Any medical procedures which require post operative care or observation should be arranged 24hours in advance by speaking with the Supervisor of the Dog/Cat area. Where ever possible they should be scheduled for early in the week and in the morning. This is requested so that the animal can be monitored effectively after the procedure. We have a small animal surgery that can be made available for minor procedures. If this facility is required please discuss with the Supervisor of the Dog/Cat area. You will need to bring your own equipment/instruments and consumables. Any equipment that enters the site will require treatment/disinfection prior to being used on another animal or leaving the site. You will also need to provide advice on any pre-operative requirements 24 hours prior to the procedure. Please notify Dog/Cat Supervisor of any cancellations for procedures.
Dogs and cats may require medical sampling for diagnostic purposes. Samples from live animals (blood, tissue, stool etc) may contain and transmit an exotic disease. The fact that samples need to be drawn may be an indication that at that time the animal poses a greater level of unacceptable quarantine risk. Samples taken from a dog/cat in a Post Entry Animal Quarantine (PEAQ) facility may only go to a laboratory that is a Quarantine Approved Premises (QAP) for preparation and/or testing. Private vets must provide any samples taken from an animal to AQIS staff for packaging and despatch to the appropriate QAP prior to leaving the station. You will be required to complete a submission form.
Dogs and Cats in PEAQ requiring offsite hospitalisation are still considered as posing an unacceptable level of Quarantine risk as they have not completed their Quarantine period, therefore any requests for an animal to go offsite must be approved by the Station Manager.
Owner Representative or Agent
Any person(s) other than the Importer named on the Import Permit, must have written authority from the Importer to receive information on an animal and to visit an animal at Eastern Creek Post Entry Animal Quarantine Station, during the quarantine period.
Visitors to Eastern Creek Post Entry Animal Quarantine Station are required to comply with all directions issued by a Quarantine Officer. It is an offence under the Commonwealth Quarantine Act 1908 to provide misleading information under section 16AE or to fail to follow a quarantine direction from a Quarantine Officer under section 76.
Private Veterinarians in breach of a Quarantine Officer’s direction and/or the written directions in this orientation package will not be permitted to re-enter Eastern Creek Post Entry Animal Quarantine Station.
Where it is deemed by the Government Veterinarian that an animal has been exposed further to an exotic disease risk – those animals may be required to remain in Quarantine for an extended period.
