AQIS aims to approve all import permit applications within 10 business days from the date of receipt. If any section of the application is completed incorrectly or further information is required, AQIS will attempt to contact you. This may result in a longer application processing time. Please allow additional time if you have elected to receive your import permit by fax or delivered by mail.
There are two options for completing and submitting the Application to Import Live Animals (Zoo Animals, Lab Animals, Birds and Eggs).
1. Complete and submit application form online (eLodgement)
The Application to Import Live Animals (Zoo Animals, Lab Animals, Birds and Eggs) can be submitted and paid for electronically, within our secure environment. The application form consists of three sections:
- Importer and exporter details
- Commodity details and additional information
- Importer declaration and payment
When submitting an eLodgement application, payment can only be made by credit card.
The minimum fee for online lodgement is $85.00 and assessment charges will apply. View the charging schedule for import permit applications to ensure you have authorised sufficient payment.

2. Download, complete and submit manual application form (post, fax or scan and email)
The minimum fee for manual lodgement is $150.00 and assessment charges will apply. View the charging schedule for import permit applications to ensure you have authorised sufficient payment.
You can pay for the processing of your manual application by one of the following ways:
- Credit card: Credit card payment form
PDF [22kb] - Bank cheque: Post a bank cheque payable to the 'Collector of Public Monies, DAFF'. This must be in Australian dollars and your manual application will need to be submitted by post.
