How to complete an application to import Horses and Alpacas

The Application to Import Live Horses and Alpacas consists of the following sections:

Importer Details

Enter the name, street address, telephone number, fax number and email address of the person or organisation importing the goods into Australia. In the space provided, enter the contact person's name for this consignment. This name will be included on the Import Permit.

Lodging online: please note an email address and a home phone and/or mobile number are required in both Importer and Exporter details.

Exporter details

The exporter is the individual or organisation who is sending the commodity to Australia. Provide the exporter's street address, telephone number, fax number and email address (if applicable).

Animal/Commodity details

You must provide a thorough description of the live animals that you intend to import. Use the following example as a guide for the detailed requirements.

Scientific name (genus, species)

Description (name and/or method of identification including microchips, tattoos, leg bands) Number of animals

Identification: brands (see attached documents for details).

Purpose of import

In this section please indicate the grounds for which the animal is entering Australia. This will assist the assessment of quarantine risk and as such is a mandatory field.

Country of export

As each country has a different pest and disease risk status, information is to be provided as to the country of export of the live animals or reproductive materials.

Other details

Genetically modified status

Please indicate if the live animals or reproductive materials you intend to import have been genetically manipulated or contain any genetically manipulated material. If so, please provide specific details.

Horses

AQIS cannot issue an Import Permit for Horses until details regarding the premises where the horse will undergo pre-export quarantine and the supervising District office of Official Veterinary Service are provided.

Transport details

Mode of transport

Please indicate if the live animals or reproductive materials you intend to import are travelling by air or sea.

Estimated date of arrival

Please indicate estimated date that the live animals or reproductive materials you intend to import will be arriving in Australia.

Route details to Australia

Please indicate the travel route of the live animals or reproductive materials, country by country, from departure until arrival into Australia. You must call an AQIS veterinary officer in the state of import at least 72 hours prior to arrival to confirm these details.

AQIS post-arrival quarantine accommodation

Please indicate the AQIS quarantine station that will provide post arrival accommodation if required.

Approved Import Permit

Please indicate your preferred mode of delivery. Note, if email is selected the terms and conditions have to be accepted.

Importer declaration

The importer declaration outlines the legal obligation of the individual that is applying for the Import Permit and must be filled in by all applicants. Please read carefully before signing the declaration.

Payment details

Please attach payment details and confirm your payment method.
