Quarantine Waste Scheme

Quarantine Waste poses a significant risk to Australia's biosecurity. These risks are managed through strict control measures. There are currently six Schemes which manage Quarantine Waste and these risks.

The Schemes are:

  • Collection of Quarantine Waste
  • Storage of Quarantine Waste
  • Transportation of Quarantine Waste
  • Burial of Quarantine Waste
  • Treatment of Quarantine Waste by Autoclave
  • Treatment of Quarantine Waste by High Temperature Incineration

These Schemes allow AQIS approved persons to handle and manage Quarantine Waste as specified by the Scheme that they are signed onto.

Some Schemes have prerequisites that must be met before being approved. These prerequisites can be found in the Schemes Schedule document.
