AQIS is developing an Onshore Fumigation Strategy to strengthen quarantine and export onshore fumigation practices.
The aim of the strategy is to ensure that Australian fumigators attain and maintain the highest standard of fumigation performance and compliance with AQIS requirements. This will be achieved by:
- industry competency assessment against the AQIS Methyl Bromide Fumigation Standard, through an initial audit of fumigation performance
- continuation of co-regulatory arrangements for both import and export fumigations
- improved training of AQIS officers in fumigation practices and auditing techniques.
AQIS is implementing the Australian Fumigation Accreditation Scheme (AFAS) in overseas countries that have been identified as high risk for fumigation failures.
Under the improved onshore fumigation arrangements, AQIS will require Australian fumigators to demonstrate the same competency, against the AQIS Methyl Bromide Fumigation Standard, as we require under AFAS.
Australian fumigation companies who have met the AQIS onshore fumigation requirements will be recognised as approved onshore quarantine/export fumigation providers.
