QEAC review of NAQS - 1998

In June 1998, the Government commissioned the Quarantine and Exports Advisory Council (QEAC) to undertake a review of the performance, appropriateness and effectiveness of the Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy (NAQS). The purpose of the review was to determine whether the Government should continue to provide additional funding to the program.

The review found the program to be effective in its efforts to protect Australia's animal and plant health and the environment from threats arising from our close proximity to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Following the review’s findings, the Government has agreed to continue additional funding for the NAQS program as announced in the May Federal Budget. This takes the total annual NAQS budget to $7 million.

The review report contained 15 major recommendations related to NAQS operations, scientific and public awareness activities and was endorsed by QEAC in December last year. AQIS has considered the specific recommendations of the review and has responded to these recommendations as set out below.
