Hand Disinfectants for use at Class 5 and Class 7 Insectary Quarantine Approved Premises

The Class 5 and Class 7 Insectary criteria require that, upon completion of quarantine work and prior to leaving the approved area, all personnel must disinfect their hands using a department approved disinfectant. A list of all currently approved hand disinfectants is provided below.

Note: The above is a guide only as to what may be used when decontaminating equipment, spillage areas or situations as directed by the Department of Agriculture. Premises holders should also contact their respective State/Territory governments to check what chemicals are approved in their States/Territory.

Chemicals must be applied in accordance with the label directions.

Notes:

  1. Some disinfectants may present a health hazard to workers and may cause damage to some metals such as aluminium, chrome and similar alloys. The premises holder must be aware that possible damage to surfaces from any treatments may occur. Disinfectants should be used as per manufacturer's directions and where corrosion or discolouring is of concern, washed off after use.  

  2. Care must be taken when applying the disinfectant to ensure that the surface is not damaged. The first application should be on a small, less exposed area and should be checked for damage such as paint tainting (colour change), smearing or bubbling before the disinfectant is applied to the rest of the item.

  3. Any damage to goods from disinfection procedures should be reported to the Department of Agriculture Canberra Office. 

  4. Protective clothing including boots, safety glasses and gloves (preferably disposable) should be worn when handling any chemical disinfectant used for decontamination. Particular care must be taken to avoid contact with skin or eyes, and inhalation of fumes or powders. 

  5. Acid and alkaline based disinfectants must not be mixed.

  6. The Department of Agriculture refers to Appendix E of the Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS 2243.3:2002 – Safety in Laboratories Part 3; Microbiological aspect of containment facilities) for the appropriate application of Hypochlorite, Ethanol and Isopropyl alcohol as disinfectants.  These chemicals are approved only for the applications recommended through the standard.
