Emerging Technologies in Agriculture
Agriculture, like other businesses in a competitive marketplace, needs to keep up with new and emerging technologies to improve productivity, environmental sustainability and financial viability.
BRS conducted a conference on "Emerging technologies in agriculture: From ideas to adoption" during 25-26 July 2000. It gave attention to three areas of technology that are expected to have a major impact on agriculture in the foreseeable future: gene technology; aids to risk management and sustainable agriculture; and e-commerce and the internet. It also addressed the capacity of rural communities to change and adopt the new technologies.
The intended audience included policy makers, industry leaders, and research managers and investors. The presenters addressed issues relevant to research and development into new technologies, and adoption at the farm level.
The proceedings, edited by David White and Jim Walcot, are valuable to those developing rural policy, and to those seeking a better understanding of the complex nature of modern agriculture based on extensive research and knowledge.
