Continental Forest Monitoring Framework

The National Forest Inventory (NFI) is investigating the feasibility of introducing a comprehensive inventory of the nation's continental forests and woodlands.

A new national framework for forest and vegetation data is needed because current periodic map compilations are not adequate to report on changes in forest extent or condition.

The NFI has developed the Continental Forest Monitoring Framework (CFMF) to address this issue. When implemented, the CFMF will provide consistent, independent and reliable statistics on the full extent and trends of Australia?s forests and woodlands.

The program will meet Australia's obligations under National and International reporting protocols (the Montreal Process) by measuring trends such as:

  • age
  • size
  • species composition, and
  • changes in forest management and tenure
