Australia's long term ecological research forest sites

Welcome to Australia's Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Forest Sites web page. As the national source for best quality scientific information about Australia’s forests, the Bureau of Rural Sciences is the host of the web page.

LTER programs have been developed in recognition of the importance of assessing and resolving complex environmental issues of interest to the global scientific community.

In 1993 the International Long Term Ecological Research (ILTER) network was formed to develop a worldwide program and the infrastructure necessary to support communication and distributed database management.

As of December 1998, 17 countries have established formal national LTER programs and joined the ILTER network, with a number of others actively pursuing the establishment of national networks. Australia's LTER Forest Sites web page is Australia’s contribution to this ILTER network.
