Understanding the social, demographic and cultural fabric of Australia's rural and regional industries and communities underpins development of evidence-based policy. BRS is the Government's leading source of scientific analysis and information on the social consequences of policy decisions relating to agricultural, food, fisheries and forest industries.
The Social Sciences Program (SSP) provides scientific advice, assessments and tools to assess the human and social dimensions of change affecting Australia's rural industries, communities and landscapes. The SSP has expertise in a broad range of social science disciplines including sociology, psychology, human geography, anthropology, public policy, engineering, environmental studies and economics. The program also specialises in survey design and analysis, stakeholder engagement, social impact assessments and social economic mapping. The priority research areas for 2007-08 are climate change (social adaptation), water (institutional analysis and adaptation), peri-urban (biosecurity, food production) and social change in production landscapes (agriculture, fisheries and forestry).
