National Water Commission - Australian Water Resources 2005

Project objective

The National Water Commission (NWC), through the Water Resources Observation Network (WRON) Alliance (which includes the Bureau of Rural Sciences) consortia is developing the Australian Water Resources 2005 (the Baseline Assessment). The Baseline Assessment will provide a snapshot of Australia's water resources at the beginning of the National Water Initiative (NWI) which addresses key issues of the water resource relevant to the NWI and will provide a suitable baseline against which future comparisons can be made. The Assessment will be repeatable and facilitate the establishment of an ongoing water data information source. The Assessment is required under Clause 105 of the 2004 Inter-Governmental Agreement for a NWI.

Key deliverables

The assessment will:

  • Involve collecting, collating, analysing, and presenting required water resource data from across Australia in a suitable form
  • Involve consulting with stakeholders, including relevant experts, to deliver a product that meets the requirements of the NWC
  • Require the development of a discussion paper, based on an analysis of the data, identifying and discussing key issues relevant to NWI and water reform, and
  • Facilitate the development of an ongoing national water resource data asset.

Project outputs will be made available via www.water.gov.au
