Adaptation

The Adaptation Research Program has been established to help farmers develop strategies and practices to manage the effects of climate change.

The program is investing in a nationally coordinated package of research projects, which aim to develop knowledge and management strategies to assist primary producers to adapt to a changing climate while increasing productivity.

The program consists of ten projects and includes funding from the Federal Government’s Climate Change Research Program, state departments and industry and research bodies.

Research under the program will support primary producers to:

  • adapt to the unavoidable impacts of climate change
  • capitalise on potential opportunities
  • promote the development of sustainable and resilient production systems.

Research will be focused on results that can be applied in the short to medium term to counter the impacts of climate change that are already beginning to occur.

The adaptation projects will be established in all states and the Northern Territory under six theme areas: innovation—climate ready crops, cropping management systems, industry opportunities, perennial horticulture, livestock systems and fishery systems.

In selecting specific projects, particular attention has been paid to those which consider the emissions consequences of adaptation strategies and are linked to mitigation projects already funded under the Climate Change Research Program.

It is important to understand the interaction of mitigation and adaptation measures — it is vital that both be considered in developing future plans to manage climate change on the farm.

Details of each project under the Adaptation Research Program are available.
