Aquaculture Action Agenda - National Aquaculture Development Committee

The Commonwealth Government, in partnership with State and Territory Governments and the Australian aquaculture industry, has established a National Aquaculture Development Committee to develop and implement the Aquaculture Action Agenda and to act as a high level advisory body to the aquaculture industry and governments.

The Committee’s Terms of Reference are:
The National Aquaculture Development Committee will:

  1. Advance the development of a sustainable, internationally competitive and export oriented aquaculture industry capable of achieving $2.5 billion in annual sales by 2010.             
    1. develop a communication strategy;  
    2. identify impediments to development of the industry and suggest solutions;   
    3. identify and prioritise outcomes necessary to enhance growth;   
    4. identify and prioritise actions required to achieve outcomes;   
    5. develop a timetable for undertaking priority actions and achieving outcomes;   
    6. allocate responsibility amongst stakeholders for each action;   
    7. regularly review and report on progress of the action agenda.
  2. Develop and implement the Aquaculture Action Agenda including:
  3. Gain industry and community support for continued aquaculture development.        
  4. Encourage economic, social and environmental sustainable aquaculture development.             
  5. Encourage mutual trust and co-operation between government and the aquaculture industry.             
  6. Disseminate information to industry and governments regarding the Committee's business

First Meeting - 7/8 February 2001, Parliament House, Canberra
The NADC held its first meeting on 7/8 February 2001 in Parliament House, Canberra.
Based on previous industry analysis, workshops and their own views the NADC identified the key impediments and opportunities to growth and grouped them under the following headings:

  1. Communications and Promotion             
  2. Resource Access and Sustainability             
  3. Investment Environment             
  4. Management and Regulatory Framework             
  5. Research and Development             
  6. Education and Training

The NADC agreed to present the key impediments and opportunities to future industry growth in a discussion paper to facilitate industry and public participation in the Action Agenda.

Second Meeting - 28/29 August 2001, Hilton Motel, Port Lincoln, SA
The second NADC meeting was convened so the Committee could consider the outcomes of the extensive consultation process and draft recommendations to address impediments and opportunities.
