Objectives of Resource Sharing

In 2003, through the Commonwealth Fisheries Policy Review: Looking to the Future: A Review of Commonwealth Fisheries Policy, stakeholders identified a need for the Government to formally address the ongoing issue of resource sharing between users of Commonwealth fisheries resources.

What is Resource Sharing?

Resource sharing describes arrangements that give different users, such as commercial and recreational fishers, shared access to the fish resources in a particular fishery. While in the past predominantly access by the commercial fishing industry has been regulated, resource sharing arrangements formalise shared access arrangements for all relevant user groups.

Objectives of Resource Sharing

The Australian Government, while maintaining stewardship over relevant fishery resources, will pursue the following objectives when developing resource sharing arrangements for Commonwealth fisheries:

  • to avoid conflict between sectors by ensuring equitable access to Commonwealth fisheries resources
  • to effectively manage the total extraction of fish resources from Commonwealth fisheries to contribute to their long-term sustainability
  • to engage the relevant sectors in the development of resource sharing arrangements and seek to develop mutually acceptable arrangements, where possible.
