Marine protective areas
The department provides policy input into the Australian Oceans Policy. It provides advice and comment on the proposed Marine Bioregional Plans and marine protected areas to ensure the interests of all stakeholders are carefully considered. Details on the recently announced South-east marine protected area network.
The Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts leads the Marine Bioregional Planning process. The development of the South-west Bioregional Plan and Northern Bioregional Plan and subsequent marine protected areas will be an upcoming focus.
