Effective exports controls for illegally harvested abalone
The Australian Government is undertaking a review of Australia’s export controls for illegally harvested abalone.
In support of this process, DAFF released the discussion paper: Effective Export Controls for Illegally Harvested Abalone
PDF [180kb] published March 2005.
The paper:
- provided an outline of the Australian abalone industry (including a discussion of current management arrangements and jurisdictional responsibilities)
- identified some of the costs of the illicit trade in illegally harvested abalone
- outlined a range of options that could be implemented to improve the Australian Government’s control over the export of illegal abalone and
- invited comments from stakeholders on the feasibility of each of these options.
Submissions on the issues discussed in the paper were invited from relevant industry members and other interested parties. In preparing submissions, respondents considered the following:
- the significance of this issue to the Australian abalone industry
- the impact of the illegal trade on the legitimate seafood industry
- the feasibility of implementing each of the options outlined in the discussion paper
- the costs and benefits of implementing each option
- alternative approaches that were not highlighted in the discussion paper
- issues that should be considered in implementing the options.
Submissions closed on 22 April 2005.
