The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) is responsible for ensuring the sustainable use and cost-effective management of Commonwealth fisheries. It provides management, advisory, compliance and licensing services and develops operational policies and regulations. The Australian Government and the commercial fishing industry jointly fund AFMA. Costs of managing commercial fisheries under the Commonwealth’s jurisdiction are recovered through levies and charges.
Established under the Primary Industries and Energy Research and Development Act 1989, the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) provides a planning and funding mechanism to increase industry investment in, and improve the cost-effectiveness of fisheries research. FRDCs funding base comes from both government and industry contributions.
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) is a research bureau within the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. ABARES produces a number of fisheries related reports including; fisheries statistics, economic survey results, national status reports, fishery surveys, technical reports and annual fishery status reports. The fishery status reports provide an independent evaluation of the biological status of fish stocks and the economic status of Commonwealth-managed fisheries. Each report includes:
- recent developments in fisheries
- species biology
- monitoring and research
- biological status of stocks
- environmental status of fisheries.
The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPaC) is responsible for implementing the Australian Government’s policies to protect Australia’s environment and heritage, and to promote a sustainable way of life.
