A general guide to exporting fish and fish products

In March 2001 the Fisheries Market Access and Trade Program was formulated within the Fisheries and Aquaculture Branch, the need was recognised for a more coordinated approach to address deficiencies in government-industry’s approach to market access issues.

The Fisheries Market Access and Trade Program has also published guides for specific countries, covering material from exporting, business customs, and market access hints.

The information below is a general guide to some main Australian government websites that provide information on exporting fish and fish products.

Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service: The Fish Exports Program

The Fish Exports Program manages and facilitates exports according to legislation by providing operational, policy and technical advice to the export seafood industry to assist in maintaining international market access. 

Australian Trade Commission (Austrade)

Austrade’s role is to help Australian companies win overseas business for their products and services by reducing the time, cost and risk involved in selecting, entering and developing international markets.

Austrade offers both free and fixed-charge services to help small and medium exporters develop their businesses overseas and make their first export sales. 

The services for new exporters provide eligible businesses with practical assistance to develop their businesses into successful exporting companies. They include:

  • Austrade Advisory Service

    The Austrade Advisory Service (freecall 13 28 78) is the first point of contact for businesses interested in exporting.
  • Austrade ‘export capability’ tool

    Austrade’s ‘export capability’ tool can show you the key capabilities you need in relation to aptitude and attitude, which can contribute to your company’s successful entry into export.
  • New Exporter Development Program

    The NEDP gives Australian businesses the best possible start to exporting. It  provides a range of free services to new exporters including, advice and information about getting into exporting, export coaching, and assistance on the ground in foreign markets.
  • Austrade TradeStart Program

    Is a national network of export assistance officers who work with local and private sector organisations throughout Australia.  The program gives Australian businesses the best possible start to exporting by providing the same free services as available under the NEDP. Further information visit the Austrade website.

The Australian Institute of Export

Assist exporters in establishing what is available in terms of support, who it's available from and how to make contact with the provider.

The institute publishes several useful publications, including The Export Handbook which is a comprehensive guide to practical aspects of exporting essentials for both new and experienced exporters.
