Australia has taken a strong stand in WTO discussions concerning the impacts of fisheries subsidies on overcapacity and overfishing in the fisheries sector, and trade distortions. 

Australia’s aim is to clarify and improve WTO disciplines on fisheries subsidies, and reduce or eliminate tariff and non-tariff barriers in the industry.
