Recreational fishing in Australia is a multi-billion dollar per year industry, and an important leisure activity for over five million Australians. Fishing for food has been practiced by Indigenous Australians for thousands of years and since the earliest visits by explorers.

A vast island continent with its huge, diverse coastline and limited yet valuable freshwater resources, Australia is one of the world's last great fishing frontiers.

The Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee has recently released Recreational fishing in Australia – 2011 and beyond: a national industry development strategy. This includes a review of the 1994 National Recreational Fishing Policy.
