Tasmanian Softwood Industry Development Program
Under the Tasmanian Softwood Industry Development Program, the Australian Government has provided $10 million to 17 projects to assist the Tasmanian softwood timber industry to invest in projects that add value to Tasmanian softwood timber. This includes upgrading harvesting equipment, introducing new technology, improving silvicultural management and assisting the softwood industry adjust to an expected reduction in softwood sawlog supply in future years.
These 17 projects have contributed over $39 million of new investment across the harvesting, processing and value adding sectors of the softwood industry and the creation of over 50 new jobs.
The Australian Government has also provided $42 million for the native forest sector under the Tasmanian Forest Industry Development Program and $4 million for country sawmillers under the Tasmanian Country Sawmills Assistance Program.
These 68 projects have contributed over $150 million of new investment across the harvesting, processing and value adding sectors of the native hardwood industry and the creation of over 110 new jobs.

All projects approved for funding under the program must be completed and claims lodged for payment with the Department by 15 June 2009 in advance of the program’s end date of 30 June 2009. Further information is available by contacting the Secretariat.

The TCFA is a joint commitment of the Australian and Tasmanian Governments to enhanced protection of Tasmania's forest environment and growth in the Tasmanian forest industry and forestry jobs. The Governments are committing over $250 million to revitalise the timber industry and preserve old-growth forests.
